Do You Need a Health Check?
You’ve probably heard the phrase “prevention is better than cure.” While we’re here for you when health issues become noticeable, many conditions can exist long before symptoms show up. A proactive health check is a great way to stay ahead of potential issues. It’s a chance for our GPs to assess your overall health and catch any problems before they become more serious.
Whether you call it a health check, annual check-up, or health assessment, it’s an important step in caring for your health. Our health checks are tailored specifically to your body, age, and any potential risk factors, such as diabetes. If you’re wondering “do I need a health check?”, read on!
Health Checks Available at Collinsville Family Practice
We offer a range of health checks designed to meet your specific needs:
- Health Check for Patients Aged 40 – 49 Years at Risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes: For patients considered ‘high risk’ by the AUSDRISK screening within the past 3 months but who are not yet diagnosed with diabetes.
- Health Check for Patients Aged 45 – 49 Years: A one-off health check to ensure your health is on track and to screen for underlying conditions, especially if you’re at higher risk due to factors like obesity, high blood pressure, or smoking.
- Health Check for Patients Aged Over 75 Years: An annual check for our senior patients. We’ll do a thorough review of your health, addressing any concerns or symptoms you’re currently experiencing.
- GP Management Plan & Team Care Arrangements: This annual appointment is for patients with chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal conditions, stroke). This check allows you to access Medicare-funded allied health appointments.
- Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health Assessment: Offered to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, regardless of age. This health check is available every 9 months and focuses on conditions commonly experienced in the Indigenous community.
- Over 45 Healthy Heart Check: For patients over 45 who have no history of cardiovascular disease. This check is recommended for anyone with heart concerns or a family history of heart disease.
How Long Will Health Checks Take?
Health checks typically take between 30 to 60 minutes, allowing us to thoroughly assess your health, screen for important conditions, and identify any potential problems. Afterward, we’ll provide a treatment plan to help you manage any issues that are found.
What Happens During a Health Check?
During your health check, our GP and Nurse will discuss various aspects of your health, including:
- Your lifestyle (diet, weight, alcohol consumption, and smoking habits)
- Your family history (heart issues, diabetes, cancer)
- Past test results (blood tests, scans, etc.)
- Any symptoms you’ve been experiencing since your last check
Together, we’ll create a comprehensive picture of your health. We’ll also provide suggestions for healthy changes to help you stay happy and healthy.
